Kaikoura Road Survey

Mobile Laser Scanning & Aerial Lidar

The 2016 KaikĊura earthquake caused significant damage to the area, closing both State Highway 1 (SH1) and the Main North Rail Line between Picton and Christchurch. This has disrupted the lives of those who live along the highway and who rely on the road and rail networks to access their homes, farms and businesses and the movement of goods to market.

Woods are proud to be part of the recovery project with the provision of accurate Mobile Laser Scanning of 60km of SH1 to provide base information.  The project had previously undertaken Aerial Lidar Surveys for wide area terrain mapping but required greater detail and accuracy for detailed design.  Woods integrated the existing Aerial Lidar Survey point cloud data with Mobile Laser Scan point cloud data to leverage the wide coverage of the ALS and the extreme detail and accuracy of the MLS for seamless detailed survey products.

Along with the MLS point cloud capture Woods captured 360° panoramic imagery every 10m along the route.  The imagery aides the detailed data extraction for the survey products and is provided to the project to improve the understanding of site conditions without the need to visit the site.
